Biography

By Daniel Sylvester

For many artists involved in Windsor, Ontario’s fertile scene, the cultural hub isn’t just separated by a straggling, emerald waterway, it’s divided via an international border.

When the Covid-19 pandemic shelved travel across the iconic Ambassador Bridge and the convenient Windsor/Detroit tunnel, working musicians, artists, content creators, and journalists had been swiftly cut off from collaborators, partners, and creative spaces vital to their craft.

Over nine tracks and 36-minutes, FOUND IN FLOODS, from Windsor, ON’s HURON LINES comes off as a direct response to our shared moment of disconnect, pause, and loneliness and transforms it into a visceral, bruised masterwork.

Over nine tracks and 36-minutes, FOUND IN FLOODS, from Windsor, ON’s HURON LINES comes off as a direct response to our shared moment of disconnect, pause, and loneliness and transforms it into a visceral, bruised masterwork.

The angular and muscular “Working Band” touches on the unglamorous side of playing music, as vocalist/guitarist Dave Mueller focuses on restiveness and doubt. The guttural and dusty “Blacklight” gives attention to the often-unspoken plague of mental health suffered by men and the silence that often comes with it. Sonically inspired by one of Huron Lines’ influences, Sonic Youth, “Thurst” tells the tale of lovers parted by the Detroit River during lockdown.

Previous Releases: Lost at the Border
Release Date:  November 2021

LOST AT THE BORDER, released in November 2021, is the debut album from new Windsor, ON, Canada quartet HURON LINES is built on musical pedigree that could have only been crafted on the border between Windsor, ON and Detroit, MI.

The album pushes from American post-hardcore and garage rock bliss, British shoegazey swagger and melodic Canadian indie rock - a combination of influences that were carved out of years bouncing around the border cities scenes in touring bands and recording studios on both sides of the border.

Vocally, the combination of Dave Mueller’s gritty baritone delivery combined with RJ Brando’s layered harmonies sets the tone for a band hitting its stride as one of Canada’s up and coming acts to watch.

MEDIA

“Bridging heavy metal, garage rock, post punk with dashes of shoegaze and (to me) even tinges of grunge, Huron Lines' blend power with a longing dreaminess. The artful theater they create for their musical narration has hard edges but the poetry within "Lost and Found" speaks of an endless passion.”
AMERICAN PANCAKE, USA

“Huron Lines have been steadily releasing solid alt-rock tracks for the past few months, catching our attention and making us look forward to more. Their latest single is no exception. Really diggin’ this [...] solid grungy alt-rock with killer vocals and riffs.” FROM THE STRAIT, Canada

“Huron Lines establish their sense of chemistry instantly, with their atmospheric yet gritty debut single.”
INDIE TOP 39, United Kingdom

“Loving the singer's voice - with the rusty tone, it's really cool. Also, really like the melancholic feel. Quality alt rock.” -
CATCH TWENTY TWO, Netherlands

“Huron Lines is a Canadian band with a charismatic singer bringing in mind Girls Against Boys’ Scott McCloud, and ‘Lost and Found’ is an anthemic indie rock single with addictive melodies and loud amplifiers”
LAST DAY DEAF, Greece

“The gravelly vocals and loud/quiet dynamics should instantly throw you back to the grunge era, with some underlying post-punk instrumentals giving the track a decidedly modern spin.”
SOME PARTY, Canada

Copy of 16_Huron Lines_B&W.jpg

“[...] a more than enjoyable listen bolstered by some crisply delivered lead vocals that sit with ease amidst the waves of charging electric guitars, building live kit energy, raw lyrics, thumpy bass low end, intense lyrics and clean mix/master. Loads of verve here. Super raw.
I dig it. Props.”

MUSIC ON THE MOON, Canada

“Dang! I love those vocals. I mean, the whole song is great but those vocals!!!!”
GIRL AT THE ROCK SHOWS, United States

"I listened to this album 3 times last night. It’s sooooo good! Huron Lines “Lost at the Border”. Post Punk, dirty guitars with soulful melodies intertwined. I’m a huge Afghan Whigs fan, and this album pulls out some of the same emotions the Whigs bring out in me."
SHAWN V / HAPPY LITTLE CROWD PRODUCTIONS

“There are some amazing raw tones to that vocal - that husky sound to it is great.”
WHEN THE HORN BLOWS, United Kingdom

“The production is stark and clean. The mood of the [song] echoes 90s lesser-known alternative acts. The vocal tone is good and feels weighed down by the burdens of the world—a very strong start from the Canadian quartet.”
ALT 77, Romania

Hopefully people can relate to it and find some inspiration. We thought it was a good way to introduce this set of songs and the new band to the world." - D. Mueller, Huron Lines Directed by Garth Jackson @ Troublelight Films. Music by Huron Lines. Words by David Mueller. Recorded, Engineered and Mixed by Joshua Kaiser of Kaiser Sound in Windsor, ON. Mastered by Bill Skibbe at Third Man Mastering in Detroit, MI. Label: Chieftown Music Distribution: Believe Music / Silver Door Entertainment Release Date: March 19th, 2021 Huron Lines is: David Mueller (guitar, vocals) Grainger Harris (guitar) Nick Mitchell (drums) RJ Brando (bass, backing vocals) Hometown: Windsor, ON, Canada Years Active: 2021 to present Graphic Design & Layout: Jordan Braithwaite at Cosech Design Artwork Photography: Jonathan Dy About HURON LINES: As anyone who’s gazed northbound down the barren downtown strip of Ouellette Avenue knows, the presence of Detroit looms large across Windsor, Ontario. For the inhabitants of Canada’s most southern city, Detroit’s crumbling art deco skyline has become a symbol of identity and pride, as Windsorites are fed a steady diet of culture as local television, and terrestrial, public, and college radio are broadcasted across the emerald Detroit River, visual artists share residency across the border, and (prior to COVID 19) access to sporting events, concerts, and music festivals are merely separated by a short trip through the Windsor/Detroit tunnel. For the four members of HURON LINES, Detroit has always been an integral part of their sound, aesthetic, and their anything-goes approach to making music. LOST AT THE BORDER, the debut album from HURON LINES is a direct result of the eclectic and adventurous nature of the scene they grew up with. Across eight tracks and 30 minutes, vocalist/guitarist Dave Mueller’s beautifully dusty delivery shapes the powerful but yearning approach, while bassist RJ Brando imposes an anthemic feel due to his soaring backup vocals. Guitarist Grainger Harris and Drummer Nick Mitchell keep the angular twin guitar attack moving forward, adding lush leads on top of a gutteral groove-filled backbeat. HURON LINES’ bandleader Dave Mueller fronted notable Windsor post-punk/noise outfit Full White Drag in the 00's, touring North America and releasing music with Inner Flight Records, before taking residency in New York City to record with producer Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Cults, Fucked Up) and musical mentor Scott McCloud (of Girls Against Boys and Soulside). Returning to his hometown, Mueller recruited a group of celebrated local musicians to release an album for a project called Club Thunderbolt. Recorded by Chris Koltay in Detroit, the 2013 LP titled City of Salt enjoyed chart success on Canadian campus radio while receiving national attention across publications like Exclaim!, who called it "a mature and instinct-driven album from a band experienced enough to bare their chops". Now paired down and featuring former contributors to the Club Thunderbolt project but with a renewed focus and with a new name, the line up consists of David Mueller on vocals/guitar, Grainger Harris (Silent Movie Type) on guitar/backup vocals, RJ Brando (Silent Movie Type, Grough) on bass, and Nick Mitchell (Godhead, Spine) on drums, LOST AT THE BORDER shows the quartet releasing the best music of their respective musical careers—pulling gracefully and forcefully from post-punk, shoegaze, garage rock, and sludge metal, all the while leaving the listener with something that could only have be birthed amongst the shadows of the Motor City. Then the moment vanishes and you wonder if it ever happened in the first place. But the feeling carries on...” - D. Mueller LONELY LOVER, the 4th single from Windsor, ON’s HURON LINES, establishes the band as one of Canada’s hardest hitting new rock bands with its edgy post-punk and atmospheric rock undertones combined with vocalist Dave Mueller’s gritty delivery. Cleverly produced by Joshua Kaiser (Psychic Void, Flower Face) in Windsor and mastered by Bill Skibbe at Third Man (Jack White, Dead Weather) in Detroit, with LONELY LOVER the band is continuing their quest to push the boundaries of what Canadian alternative rock is known for around the globe. Cleverly produced by Joshua Kaiser (Psychic Void, Flower Face) in Windsor and mastered by Bill Skibbe at Third Man (Jack White, Dead Weather) in Detroit, with LOST IN SARNIA the band is continuing their quest to push the boundaries of what Canadian alternative rock is known for around the globe. I think I was hearing stories of friends who went away with the best intentions and ended up getting lost in the plot along the way far from home. The use of Sarnia, another border city less than 2 hours from where I live, in the song was something that I think must've come subconsciously as I wanted to set the song somewhere and it was a place that I was more familiar with then towns further away in Western Canada but still had some of that same imagery around refineries and the darkness around the edges that can creep in if you are not careful.” - D. Listening more and talking less usually end up bringing you closer together whether it’s your partner, your neighbour or someone halfway around the world. The song exists in that moment when blurting something out is probably not the wisest thing one could do if there are any plans of resolving things between yourselves.” - D.
